Kicking Fossil Fuels to the Curb: One Small Change at a Time

Did you know that fossil fuels supply around 80% of the world’s energy? Being such an overwhelmingly dominant energy source, fossil fuels were found to be responsible for 89% of global CO2 emissions in 2019.

With the fossil fuel industry powering so much of our world, it can feel like the standard—like there’s no other way to live. But by making small changes in our daily lives, we can begin to decarbonize our lifestyles for the greater purpose of becoming less dependent on these detrimentally harmful fossil fuels.

Transportation is a large contributing factor to our carbon footprints. To kick off Earth Month, let’s talk about how we can begin the transition into sustainability in small ways while moving around our world that will lead to a greater impact.

Driving Ability On and Off the Ice with Connecticut Whale

At Rideshare, our partnerships allow our mission to reach new people in ways that enrich the work we do. Our most recent partnership venture has been with Connecticut’s women’s professional hockey team, CT Whale, and it has already proven worthwhile.

In the early discussions of how our two organizations could align, we had tons of ideas. The relationship that was meant to happen fell into place when we learned more about the disadvantages that many women’s and girl’s hockey teams face compared to men’s and boy’s teams.

Stories were shared with us of how youth girl’s teams often have to change in bathroom stalls instead of locker rooms and take yellow school buses on trips while youth boy’s teams would load onto coach buses. We also learned that CT Whale, within the Premier Hockey Federation, did not even have access to an equipment van for the team’s belongings, a mainstream benefit within the NHL. This was the Eureka! moment for our partnership.

As an organization run by a woman CEO, Nanci Fitzgerald, with many incredible women making up our team at Rideshare, we knew fitting into a solution for this team made perfect sense for us—Especially when we learned that we could do so by providing a vehicle for them to begin to break down the barrier of disadvantages for women’s sports.

Welcoming the Walking Pad While Working from Home

Our 9 to 5s are not exactly conducive to an active lifestyle. Especially when you aren’t even leaving the house to go to work, it is easy to slip into “excessive sitting.” I’m sure we’re all familiar with the back pain that comes from sitting at a desk for most of the day.

Working from home calls for creative ways to be productive. First came the standing desk to avoid long days of sitting still. Now, the standing desk has been elevated even higher.

The next big trend for telecommuters: The walking pad.

To break out of desk chair days, corporate work-from-homers are turning to casual movement with a walking pad. For the last few months, Tik Tok has been full of videos of the benefits people have found since bringing a walking pad into their routine.

Elizabeth “Lizzie” Jennings Graham: 100 Years Before Rosa Parks

Throughout American history, traveling while Black has been a focal point of racial justice. Today, this conversation continues through the idea of transit equity. We as a nation recognize Transit Equity Day on February 4th to commemorate the life and legacy of Rosa Parks on the day of her birthday.

As a key figure in the Civil Rights era, she has been honored as the “first lady of civil rights” and the “mother of the freedom movement”. Today, we want to expand on the valiant legacy of Rosa Parks by telling a story of transit equity that came 100 years before her.
