May is Bike to Work Month – Let's Roll into a Healthier, Happier Commute

Posted on

Each May, the League of American Bicyclists encourages people across the country to exchange car keys for bike helmets in celebration of Bike to Work Month—and we're all in! Whether you're an experienced cyclist or new to biking, now is the perfect time to reconsider your commute and try biking to work.

In 2025, Bike to Work Week will occur from May 12 to May 18, with Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 16. Cities and towns nationwide are planning group rides, free tune-ups, coffee stops, and more. Don't miss out—check your community calendar for events near you and join the movement!

Why Bike? Let's Count the Health Wins

Biking to work is a game changer for your body and your brain.

  • Heart health boost: Cycling gets your heart pumping and strengthens your lungs while commuting.

  • Happy brain chemicals: Riding releases feel-good endorphins that reduce stress and anxiety.

  • Better sleep, more energy: Regular physical activity like biking helps regulate your sleep cycle and energizes you all day.

According to HelpGuide.org, even moderate exercise can help you wind down more easily at night—just be sure to do it a few hours before bedtime.

Good for You, Great for the Planet

It's not just about you (though you're awesome). Every ride helps reduce harmful emissions, traffic congestion, and noise pollution—a growing concern in cities across the U.S. Constant traffic noise isn't just annoying; it's linked to stress, sleep disruption, and even cardiovascular problems (Cirrus Research). Wildlife is impacted too—animals rely on sound to find food and communicate, and vehicle noise throws that off balance.

Choosing a bike over a car—even just a few times a week—can help restore some peace and quiet to your community.

Communities Are Stepping Up

More bike-friendly infrastructure is popping up across the country. Just look at Bridgeport, Connecticut, where 12 new bike repair and storage kiosks were installed in 2025 to support growing commuter needs (CT Post). Funded by the state's Community Connectivity Grant Program, these additions make it easier to hop on a bike and go.

The U.S. Bicycle Route System recently grew by 3,500 miles nationwide in states like Kansas, Indiana, and Missouri, bringing the total to over 23,000 miles of designated bike routes (Forbes). That's a lot of new places to ride!
