This Saturday is the Fourth of July, our Independence Day! Historically, this day marks the US gaining our independence from England. Each year we celebrate the Fourth of July and remember what we went through to gain our independence. It’s also a day to enjoy fireworks, barbeques, and parties with friends. That’s all great, but in the spirit of the holiday we should continue to move forward with our independence. This year, let’s break our dependence on our own personal vehicles and the gas pump! When you head out to the fireworks, or your friend’s barbeque, leave your car at home. Find an alternate form of transportation to get there, you could even carpool with friends. Have an independent, safe and happy Fourth of July this Saturday!
I don’t know anyone who likes traffic, but equally as annoying is sitting at a light that seems like it’s taking forever to change to green. No matter how long that red light seems, at least you’re not sitting at this intersection in Germany. Germany has a red light that hasn’t turned green since 1987! That’s right, you could’ve been sitting at this light for almost three decades! According the authorities, the light serves a purpose that a sign or other announcement wouldn’t suffice for regulation purposes. So, the next time you’re sitting at a red light, just think that it has to turn green sooner than this one you’re reading about.
We’ve written about people taking the bus places, we’ve even written about a couple of dogs that take the bus places. Today we bring you Artful Dodger, the cat from the UK who takes the bus. That’s right, another animal that has the knowledge to take public transportation where it needs to go. The cat picks the bus up at the station near it’s home and rides a ten mile round trip to a nearby town. Artful Dodger is such a regular that bus drivers of the route have begun bringing cat food for the unique passenger. So there are dogs and cats taking the bus now, there really is no excuse not to at least give it a try at this point.
Most people go their lives hoping to avoid automobile crashes and accidents. Not the case for ninety-one year old Chicago resident Walter Thomas. He wanted to check off an item from his bucket list, and that item was smashing through a garage door. Timing proved to be on their side to make this happen as Walter had a family member who was about to replace their garage door. They allowed Walter to sit in the car, put it in reverse, mash the gas and slam right through their garage door and into the driveway. Walter was so excited; he told the Associated Press that he doesn’t know how he will ever top that experience.
Summer is here and that means wedding season is upon us. One newlywed couple got married and left their home in New York for their honeymoon. Before they left they remembered that they had no plan for their car. The issue is the street the couple lives on has alternate side of the road parking on particular days of the week, and they had no way to move their car while away. The need for a quick solution led them to toss up this Hail Mary; they decided to just leave a pleasant note politely asking the parking enforcers to have mercy on them. They asked that they not tow their car. The note explained the situation and stated they would be glad to pay any fines incurred, but asked that they not tow the car as a wedding gift. We’ll have to wait and find out how this plays out for the couple. It’s a bold move, we’ll give them that.
