World Kindness Day 2021

Posted on by Isabelle Brown

This Sunday, November 13th, the world celebrates kindness and the power that compassion has to bind us all together. It is World Kindness Day!

It doesn’t have to be a special day to show kindness, however. Here are some ways to make kindness a part of your daily life that will spread to others, yourself, and the world around you.

Kindness Toward Others

  1. Send a good morning text message to someone you love or someone you miss.
  2. Smile. Share a smile with a stranger, with coworkers, with the person who held the door open for you. You never know whose day you could brighten.
  3. On your commute, be a safe driver. Let that car merge into your lane. Smile and wave if someone does the same for you.

Kindness Toward Yourself

  1. Be intentional with moments of joy. Play music while you cook. Look through your phone’s photo album at all the good memories you have stored inside. Make time to show yourself that kindness.
  2. Be silly. Hold your mug of coffee with two hands like you’re the main character in a Hallmark holiday movie and smile as you start your day. Listen to a podcast that makes you laugh. Send goofy photos to a loved one.
  3. Take it slow. Park at the far end of the parking lot and take a nice walk into the office or the store. Go through your morning routine with kindness toward yourself by choosing an outfit you feel confident in or doing your hair a little different than usual.

Kindness Toward the Planet

  1. Carpool with a coworker or friend. This will do wonders for your own joy, your coworker’s, and your carbon footprint.
  2. Start an outdoor hobby. Plant in-season produce if you have a backyard or community garden. Buy some perennial flower seeds to plant in your front yard, attracting pollinators and bringing some beauty to your lawn.
  3. Save energy around you. As you go through your day, unplug appliances you aren’t using. Turn off those lights and open the blinds instead. Wash your clothes in cold water and only in full loads. Take transit to work once a week. These changes will save you money, too!
